Rolando Alfaro on BADCALL

HEY ROLO! HOW’S IT GOING?

Hey! Great, thanks again for the feature!

OF COURSE! LET’S GET TO IT…WHAT IS BADCALL?

BADCALL is a lifestyle brand, its a way for me to express a way of life that pushes people to be ok with mistakes they make, to live, love, and grow without regret.

FITTING! WHAT DOES THE BRAND MEAN TO YOU?
This brand means so much to me and that’s probably why I’ve been taking my time with every aspect about it, everything has to be just right. I started it in late 2014 and only just released my first run of hoodies to the public. I’m learning a lot about this industry and really trying to produce the best quality product that actually stands for something. But I know it takes time.
OH WOW, THAT’S AWESOME! WHAT MADE YOU START THE COMPANY?

I’ve always been into streetwear and I love graphic design, and basically any creative media, and for a long time I wanted to start a clothing brand, so one day I just went for it. I began BADCALL shortly after a pretty serious accident.

I GOTTA ASK, WHAT ACCIDENT DICTATED THE NAME?

Well, I ended up losing most of my left pinky finger. That’s where the logo comes from: It’s a hand with a shortened pinky throwing up an “OK” symbol and resembling a “b” and a “c” for the brand name. The biggest thing to me is that I don’t regret anything in life, sometimes life gets really good and sometimes really shitty but you gotta stay in the mindset that everything happens for a reason, and no matter what happens everything is gonna be OK, the good and the bad…it all evens out. So that’s the brands philosophy. The motto, nothing happened by accident, is just that.

EPIC! WHY DO YOU THINK PEOPLE RESONATE WITH THE BRAND?

Honestly, I’m not sure haha. I think right now a lot of my customers are from my competitive drifting background, they just wanna support this brand I’m trying to build. Slowly developing more of a streetwear following. I appreciate every single order that comes through the door. This brand is not and was never to make money, I just love clothing and wanted to turn a bad time in my life into something creative and productive. But I do think there’s a few reasons people should buy my brand. First and foremost those that are in tune with the brands motto, everything I make means something. Rarely do people ask, but everything I’ve made has a story behind it. I try not to follow trends or copy anybody. Everything I produce I try to use the best quality materials at my disposal. From my stickers made with high quality 3M vinyl by a professional wide format print shop and my hoodies I just released used a 12oz. Champion reverse weave hoodie as the blank, and high quality screen-printing done right here in Kansas City. Theres also a progression you can see in my products over the past couple years, quality and efficiency now is 10x better than it was at first and thats just due to the learning curve this stuff has and its only gonna keep getting better.

YOUR STUFF IS LEGIT. WHERE CAN WE GO TO PURCHASE?!

We just launched the new website, www.badcall.life. I currently have a couple products in stock including the box logo hoodie that was just released. Everything I produce, once it sells out, I’ll never make the same thing again. I think a lot of companies find what sells well and then restock it until nobody wants it anymore. I just want to keep making new and stylish product in super limited runs. Thankfully, everything has been selling out rather fast, and all revenue just goes back into making new stuff.

I GOTTA GET SOME. DO YOU HAVE A TEAM?

Not really. I bounce ideas off certain friends of mine and I try to have my sister be a big part of the company, she went to school in Los Angeles for fashion design and merchandising but it just never panned out. I’m really really picky about every decision and I have a hard time relying on other people to come through. So for now it’s a one man show and the wonderful people that produce everything. I like how it is right now and think this is best, it makes the brand true to the idea I have for it, and I get to learn about every aspect to making this brand better and better.

ARE YOU COLLABORATING WITH ANYONE, OR WOULD YOU LIKE TO?

I’ve got a couple ideas brewing with other up-and-coming brands but right now just focusing on getting my first few clothing pieces out there and growing a little more on my own before doing a collaboration with someone. But I definitely plan on it.

I’d love to collaborate with bigger streetwear and footwear brands. I’m a die hard Vans collector, so someday having a Vans Vault collaboration would be insane. Right now Im just keeping my expectations of anything really low, I’ve set the groundwork for the brand but now I just have to keep building. I can plan everything to the tee but most likely nothing would go to plan. I’m just gonna keep traveling, designing, and learning to see where that takes me.

NO DOUBT YOU WILL! WHAT’S YOUR NEXT RELEASE?

I’m always trying to think of new stuff and designs, and I try to think outside the box and take in my experiences and surroundings for ideas for products. So, following this recent hoodie release, I’ve got two tees and at least a couple new stickers coming out rather soon. Rather than releasing a full SS17 collection, I think I want to stick to a couple new products each month that follow an overall theme, at least for now.

New line of Tee’s are dropping the second week of March…be sure to snag yours before they’re all gone and tag #BADCALL.
